Affidavit of Nanavati Commission

I, Gurbachan Singh Rathod S/o S. Puran Singh, aged 55 years, residing at Quarter No.203, Guru Harkrishan Public School, Purvi Marg, Vasant Vihar, New Delhi, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under: -  

1.                  That I am an employee of GHPS since 1976 and am residing at the above given address from 1979.

2.                  That in October/November`84, I was residing in the school campus at the above given address.

3.                  That at about 11 AM, on 31st October `84, as soon as the news of Smt. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, having been shot, was received, the school was closed as a mark of respect & sympathy and students were sent home.

4.                  That on 31st October`84, was peaceful and no untoward incidence took place.

5.                  On 1st November`84, at about 9:30 AM, Mr. R.S. Grewal, the then Head Master and I were on the terrace when we saw smoke emitting out of Malcha Petrol Pump, a Sikh owned petrol station on the outer Ring Road, about 100 yards from the school. Suddenly, we noticed that small crowd of about 100 / 150 persons had broken down the boundary fence of the school and entered the premises. They were carrying petrol cans, lathis & iron rods.

6.                  That seeing school premises being invaded about 10 / 12 staff member – all males, faced the crowd and after some hard resistance, succeeded in chasing them.

7.                  That out a little later 6 / 8 DTC buses full of violent rioters mob entered the school. They attacked us mercilessly. Mr. S.S. Bakshi, the school site engineer received many grievous injuries, some of the very serious one, we retreated towards our family staff quarter to safe guard the ladies and children. The miscreants looted the school completely and partially set on fire. My thumb was fractured during the pelting of stones by the rioters.

8.                  That some portion of the crowd attacked the residential quarters within the school premises, my quarter number is 203, being the first quarter in the road was invaded, looted completely. Quarter Nos.105 & 106 were set on fire. They evacuated our families to Non-Sikh residents for safety.

9.                  That I was a music teacher to an Americal couple and that they took my family & me to their house at West End for safety late in the evening on 1st November `84.

10.              That when the said American couple taking me from the domestic gate I also saw some policemen moving around the main gate of the school but they did not provide any help or assistance.

11.              That I returned to the school on 5th November`84. It was gutted completely. It took us 2 years to repair the school. Initially, the school was remained closed for few weeks for students particularly.
