Affidavit of Nanavati Commission

           I, Sharanjit Singh S/o S. Mohinder Singh, aged about 40 years, R/o Staff Qtr.103, Guru Harkrishan Public School, Purvi Marg, Vasant Vihar, New Delhi, do hereby on solemn affirmation state as under: -  

1.                  That I am working as Lab. Incharge in Shri Guru Harkrishan Public School, Vasant Vihar and residing in the same school premises since 1980.

2.                  That in November 1984, I was present in my house bearing Qtr. No.103, Staff Building, Shri Guru Harkrishan Public School, Vasant Vihar, New Delhi.

3.                  That on 1-11-84, at about 8:30 AM, Mr. Balwan Singh, Peon of Head Master of the school informed me that mob is building up near the Munirka village and they are going to attack to school at any moment, then took the said Balwan Singh, Peon to Head Master Mr. R.S. Garewal, where he had narrated the entire story to him. Immediately, thereafter, Head Master Mr. R.S. Garewal called a meeting all persons available in the school building in staff quarters. While we were discussing this issue by that time, we saw a mob of about 100 men approaching the school from Munirka village side who were carrying cans of petrol / kerosene and bundles of rags. They broke the boundary fence and approached to us the ground where three buses and three matadors were parked.

4.                  That when the miscreants was setting the vehicles on fire and they were pelting stones upon us where we were standing and we were throwing the same on them. Mr. Labh Singh, the then state officer of the school telephoned to our school transporter and teacher to inform the students that the school would remain close on 1st – 3rd November1984, these days were declared as holidays by the government. Mr. Labh Singh also requested the miscreants not to set the vehicles on fire as they belong to the school but they threatened to

kill him if he didn’t run away rather they attacked him with iron bar, which they were carried. I was present there alongwith Mr. Labh Singh at that time.

5.                  That the mob went away after burning one matador and thereafter we extinguished the same by pouring water on it.

6.                  That at about 10 AM, on 1-11-84, a big mob came from the side of Purvi Marg and entered the school campus from both the main and domestic gates. They had come in about 6 – 8 DTC buses. This mob was led by one Mr. Tokas resident of Munirka village. I saw them coming out of these DTC buses and about five DTC buses were parked on the Palam Marg near the T-junction of Purvi Marg. I also saw some men directing three buses, which moved on to Purvi Marg towards Vasant Vihar Colony. The mob was raising slogans, “Break and burn the school of Sardars.” These rioters were also armed with lathis, long bars and big pipes.

7.                  That the rioters started pelting stones upon us as well as on the school building. Mr. S.S. Bakshi was mercilessly beaten by the rioters and received grievous injuries in person. Mr. G.S. Rathor, Head of the Music Department also received injuries due to pelting stones upon them.

8.                  That these rioters had broken the glass panes of the doors and windows of the office and set fire to the office of the school as well as the basement. All the three laboratories were ransacked, broken and stores of Physics and Biology labs. were set on fire. At that time I was standing near the staff residential quarters within the school building and saw all these incidents. At that time, I also saw some police person in uniform were moving outside the school boundary and they were not taking any action against the rioters.

9.                  That afterwards, the mob moved towards the domestic quarters and one portion of the mob, which had entered threw the domestic gate had already set the Principal’s bungalow on fire. The other mob, which came from the main gate side and circled the residential quarters and started setting them on fire. The residence of the Head Master and one of the drivers’ said residential quarters set on fire by the rioters. They had broken the windowpanes of the staff quarters by pelting stones. The school Principal Dr. H.S. Singha was rescued by Mr. Chadha – Additional DCP, Hauz Khas and the Sikh families of the staff quarters were rescued by Ms.Nandita Haksar with the help of the volunteers, who belongs to Self Financing Quarters, Munirka Enclave and some of the volunteers were students from JNU. For two night we stayed in Munirka Quarters alongwith our families and for two days we stayed in JNU Campus Quarters.

10.              That the school had suffered a loss of Rs.35 to 40 lakh in total. An FIR was lodged with SHO Vasant Vihar P.S. but no action was taken on the said FIR by the police.
