Affidavit of Nanavati Commission

             I, Smt. Banti Kaur, widow of Shri Baldev Singh, aged about 50 years, resident of Preet Nagar, New Jail, Tajpur Road, Ludhiana, do hereby solemnly declare and affirm as under: 

1.                  That at present I do not work and depend totally on pension.

2.                  That during 1984 riots I alongwith my family were residents of Kalyanpuri New Delhi and my husband was making net of iron rods.

3.                  That in 1984my family consisted of8 members including me, my husband, three daughters and three sons.

4.                  That on 31.10.1984 I came to know through TV and peoples that Mrs.Indira Gandhi has been killed and there was lot of hue and cry outside   We locked the house from inside and kept on sitting.

5.                  That on 1.11.1984 at about 8 AM my husband went to work.  At 4. P.M. I came to know that people are killing Sikhs.  My husband did not return till evening. I asked number of people about my husband but nobody told about his where about. Then I thought that my husband might have stayed in somebody’s house.  I kept on waiting my husband but he did not return.

6.                  On 2.11.1984 I came to know that in Pandoo Nagar area crowd has burnt alive one sardar.  I rushed to that place and found nothing except ashes. I could not recognize my husband as even clothes were not remaining.  I kept on crying and came back to my house. My four brothers-in-law (brothers of my husband) were also killed and their dead bodies were not found.  My husband was youngest brother.  Riot makers had also burnt alive my sister-in-law, mother-in-law and his child also. Daughter of her husband and my husband’s brother were also burnt alive. I took shelter in Gurdwara alongwith my children and thereafter people looted my house and set it on fire.

7.                  That on 3.11.1984 I went to Block No.11 where large numbers of Sikh families were living.  There was no attack in Block No.11during my stay.  I do not know if there was any attack prior to my arrival. We kept on hearing that riot makers are killing Sikhs and looting their houses.

8.                  I do not recognize any body in the crowd.

9.                  That police did not help us at all.

10.              That after 3-4 days I got FIR registered in Kalyanpuri Police Station, Police did not harass us.

11.              That I did not take refuge in any camp.

12.              That my husband Baldev Singh and his four brothers Parma Singh, Lachman Singh, Jeevan Singh, Bhagat Singh and his sister Gurbano Kaur & her husband Sheetal Singh, her son Resham Singh and daughter of my husband’s brother Pias Kaur alias Sukhi and her husband whose name is not known to me were killed by riot makers.

13.              That I suffered a loss of Rs.50,000/- to my house and Rs.50,000/- cash was burnt.

14.              That I got an aid of Rs.20,000/- from Delhi Government and except it I got no other help.

15.              That I received no compensation for the loss to my property.

16.              I did not see any loss to Gurdwara. Riot making crowd were carrying different kind of weapons like kerosene, knives, acid etc. I do not know who was leading the mob.  Riot makers from outside.  They were on the feet.
