Affidavit of Nanavati Commission

II, Chander Singh, S/o Late S. Partap Singh, age 42 yrs., R/o 13/330, Kalyanpuri, New Delhi-110091, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under:- 1. That in November, `84, I was living at 13/330, Kalyanpuri, New Delhi-110091, I was engaged in wholesale trade of “Chattai”, jute string and such material used for making juggi, temporary shelters. I used to bring these materials by truck loads from Hastinapur, near Meerut and do retail sale at the above address. 2. That at about 5 P.M. on 31st October, `84, I had come to Kotla Mubarakpur for collecting sale proceeds from Munim Babu Khan. I was sitting with Munim Babu Khan when at about 6:30 P.M., Shree Dhiraj son of Chaudhary Khajan Singh owner of the shop with Munim Babu Khan came and told me that violence has broken out at AIIMS and pressed me to take shelter in his house. Inspite of my protests, he and his father did not let me go back to Kalyanpuri. I stayed inside their house till the morning of 2nd November,`84. At about 5 A.M. on 2nd November, `84, when it was still dark. I used a blanket to cover my hair and head like a typical villager and went to my house in Kalyanpuri on a bicycle. I reached my house at about 7 A.M. I tried to avoid all persons enroute and if necessary I took detour to bye - pass such collection of persons. My wife Gurmeet Kaur met me outside my house. She was weeping. On seeing me she burst out loudly that why had I come back there. She said, “your elder brother S. Gagan Singh had been killed. Our tenant Arjan Singh had also been killed. All others in our neighborhood had been killed, their houses looted and burnt. Our godown and our house had also been looted and burnt.” I saw that all Sikh house nearby had been reduced to ashes. At that time, our neighbor Pandit Shukla came out and took me to his house. He told me that staying out in the open was extremely dangerous for me. I stayed inside Pandit Shukla’s house for 2/3 hours. 3. That at about mid day-two policemen came to Pandit Shukla’s house. I could over hear their conversation with Pandit Shukla. The policemen said, “Panditji do not shelter Sikhs in your house. Let us take them to the police station.” Panditji came inside and told me to come outside and meet the policemen. I came out and saw that they had three stars on their shoulders. They told me, “Cut your hair and come with us to the police station.” Another Sikh S. Amin Singh who had escaped the carnage was also there. We both cut our hair and then all of us including our ladies and children accompanied the policemen to the police station. Our party included Gurcharan Singh, Dyal Singh and Niranjan Singh three sons of S. Gagan Singh (killed), these were badly wounded. (we carried them in a wooden cart) and Mellu Singh, etc. 4. That there were about 30 more children and ladies in the Police Station. We remain without food till evening. Then some Sikh families from Block 20 came. There was no carnage in Block 20. They took us to their house. There we were fed and sheltered. We returned to our houses on 5th / 6th November. After about 4 / 5 days Nagrik Ekta Munch volunteered reached us and provided rations, beddings, utensils etc. 5. That on 12th November, I lodged an FIR with the Kalyanpuri, Police Station. (Copy attached) 6. That I suffered a loss of Rs.60,000/- in the looting and burning of my godown and another loss of Rs.50,000/- in the household goods, jewelry etc. 7. That I have been paid a compensation of Rs.5,000/- on two occasion each. 8. That I pray that my total loss of Rs.1 lakh be made good. |
