Affidavit of Nanavati Commission

             I, Harjit Kaur, W/o Ajit Singh, aged 60 yrs., R/o B/59 D, Tilak Vihar, New Delhi, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under:- 

1.                  That in Oct./Nov.`84, I , my husband Ajit Singh and 3 children (one son and two daughters) were staying in Block 30/345, Trilokpuri.  My husband had spent five years on a foreign assignment as a carpenter and had brought a costly  dowry articles for my elder daughter whose marriage was fixed for January, `85.

2.                  That ferocious disturbances broke out in our Block in the morning of 1st Nov.`84.

3.                  That, standing outside my house I heard people shouting that ruffians from nearby Village Chilla were abducting sikh girls.  After some time some ruffians did arrive outside my house shouted, “Good looking tall Sikhs girls live in this house”.  Hearing this I was terribly frightened.  As soon as they went away to bring some more persons I ran out of the house with my children and sought refuge with Sh. Manga Ram a Punjabi Hindu, who lived in his Quarter No. 31/32.  I told him what the ruffians were planning.  He took pity on me and sheltered me and my children in his own house.

4.                  That the ruffians came repeatedly to the house of said Manga Ram looking for my daughters.  Manga Ram’s daughter, Geeta declared my daughters as her sisters in law and barred their way.  She, displaying enormous courage faced the ruffians and physically pushed them out  and thus saved the honour of my daughters.

5.                  That late evening on 2nd Nov.`84, we came to Kalyanpuri, Police Station and shifted to Farsh Bazaar, Police Station on 3rd Nov.`84, which was made a Camp for the Riot Victims.   We stayed in the Camp for two years thereafter.

6.                  That I visited my house on 11th Nov.`84, and found it completely looted and burnt.  I suffered a loss of Rs.1.5 lakhs on account of damage to my house and looting of my household goods / articles.

7.                  That I lodged an FIR  on 15/11/84, in Kalyanpuri Police Station.  (copy attached)

8.                  That I have received a paltry sum of Rs.5,000/- only on account of damage to my house.  I am entitled to compensation of Rs.1,45,000/- as stated above.
