Affidavit of Nanavati Commission

I, Gurmeet Kaur W/o Late Buha Singh aged 60 yrs. R/o B-61/C, Tilak Vihar, New Delhi, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under:- 1. That in Oct./Nov.`84, I and my family which included husband now deceased, four daughters and two sons were living in 21/478, Trilok Puri, Delhi-110091. 2. That on 31st Oct.`84 at Noon when we heard the news of death of Smt. Indira Gandi, PM of India spread in our colony, no untoward incident in our colony. 3. That in the morning of 1st Nov.`84, huge armed mobs invaded our colony and started looting and burning of sikh houses and killed the Sikhs. 4. That our neighbours came to us and told us that Sikhs were being killed all over the colony and we should try to save ourselves. We hid in the neighboring house. We remained hidden till evening. We watched our house being looted and burnt by the mob. 5. That when on the persuasion of our neighbour my husband and sons had cut their hair, they were turned out by them – fearful of their own lives. 6. That after dark on 1st Nov.`84, my husband left the neighbor’s house and walked towards Trilokpuri Police Station. I and my children remained hidden in our neighbours house on 2nd Nov. and 3rd Nov.`84. About 4 P.M. on 3rd Nov. Police vehicles carted the surviving ladies and children to Farsh Bazar Police Station refugee Camp. 7. That I met my husband on 4th Nov.`84. He had head bandages and lot of other injuries. I and my family stayed in the refugee Camp for 6 months. 8. That my husband continued to suffer due to his head injuries and expired in 1996. He could not do any work and we remained penniless. A paltry compensation of Rs.1,000/- was given for the injuries. A copy of the injury report is attached. 9. That I suffered a loss of Rs.70,000/- in household goods and property. I received a small sum of Rs.2,000/- towards the loss. A copy of FIR lodged in Trilokpuri Police Station on 9-11-84 is attached. |
