Affidavit of Nanavati Commission

I, Balwant Singh, S/o S. Ranjit Singh, aged 48 yrs., R/o D-231/232, Gandhi Vihar, Near Mukerjee Nagar, N.D.-110009, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under:- 1. That in Oct./Nov.`84, I and my family were residing at 2025, Janta Flats, Nand Nagri, N.D. I was working as Senior Engineer in M/s Harig India Ltd., Mohan Nagar, Ghaziabad. 2. That at about 8 A.M. on 2nd Nov. when I was at home, a large violent mob arrived at my house and asked me to come out. The mob caught hold of me and, without giving any reason, started to beat me. I was thrown on the ground. They forcibly cut my hair and beard. Suddenly some one from the rear of the crowd, shouted, “Kill the Sikh”. I somehow managed to free myself and I entered my house and bolted that from inside. I, then with my family consisting of wife and one child, ran out of the rear entrance of the house. At the end of the street, I hid my wife and the child in the lee of a building. I then surreptiously came back to see my house and saw that it had been looted and the furniture was on fire. 3. That the mob was shouting, “Trace the Sardar and kill him and his children”. 4. That sensing great danger to self and the family, I immediately ran away from that place and wading through the fields, reached Ghaziabad Railway Station at about 6 P.M. and then left for Sitapur by Lucknow Mail at 10 P.M. - where my elder brother S. Joginder Singh lived. We reached there at 10 A.M. on 3rd Nov.`84. 5. That on 6th Nov.`84, I lodged a detailed FIR at Kotwali, Sitapur (copy attached). I suffered a loss of about 1 lakh in property and household goods. 6. That in the meantime on 8th Nov.`84, my father-in-law, S. Ram Singh Matta, finding us missing and presuming the worst, lodged a complaint with P.S. Seemapuri. (copy attached) 7. That in this also our loss has been stated as Rs.90,000/- (Rupees Ninety Thousand only). |
