Affidavit of Nanavati Commission

I, Manjit Kaur, widow of S. Gurmukh Singh, aged 41 yrs., R/o A-11, Swaran Park, Post Office Mundka, Nangloi, Delhi-41. Since 1982 I am residing at this address do hereby on solemnly declare as under:- 1. On 1st November, ’84, at 10 in the morning a violent mob of about 50-60 men coming towards our house with shouting slogans “Khoon Ka Badla Khoon Se Lenge, Indira Amar Rahen”. Our all family members consisting with my husband S. Gurmukh Singh, brother-in-law (Dewar) S. Kartar Singh, S/o Ajit Singh and my mother in law, Gurbachan Kaur and my father-in-law, S. Ajit Singh, Sister-in-law, Tejinder Kaur W/o Kartar Singh along with small children ran away from the house. I along with my sister-in-law and my mother-in-law went to the house of tailor master situated in front of our house and hide ourselves there. 2. My husband and brother-in-law and father-in-law hide themselves in the corn field. The mob followed them but when they went to the said field, the mob did not follow them further. 3. The mob broke open the door of our house as soon as they reached and took away costly articles which were Jewellary of 5 Tolas, 2 Radios, Cash, Utensils, Sewing machine etc. The cost of these items were Rs.20,000/-. They looted our house and burnt our house. We have seen the entire scene from our neighbor’s house. 4. In the evening of 1st November, ’84, when entire colony was in peace we went to our house and saw that our entire house was totally burnt and costly articles were taken away by the mob. At about 8 O’clock in the night my husband, my brother-in-law and father-in-law returned to our house. We had spent the entire night in said burnt house with great difficulty. 5. On 2nd November, ’84, at 6 in the morning my husband Gurmukh Singh, brother-in-law, Kartar Singh went to police station, Nangloi. So that we can take police assistance to save our lives. When they reached the police station there the mob was already there and caught hold off them and burnt them alive. We came to know this fact subsequently. 6. When we came to know about their death we tried to go to the said police station but police did not allow us. I also came to know subsequently that my husband and my brother-in-law were thrown in already burnt truck by the mob. We did not receive their dead bodies. 7. I have received a sum of Rs.20,000/- initially and thereafter Rs.3,30, 000/- subsequently. 8. The Govt. did not pay me the compensation in respect of our burnt house. The total loss of I had suffered is of Rs.60,000/-. 9. I could not furnished my house. I pray to the Govt. that I may be given compensation in respect of my house as well as goods lying there. |
