Affidavit of Nanavati Commission

I, Avtar Singh S/o Gurbax Singh, aged about 41 yrs., R/o A-16, Gali No.2, Punjabi Colony, Gamri, Delhi-53, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under: -

1.                  That I am residing at the abovementioned address since 1964. In October/November`84, there were about 200 – 250 Sikh families living in our colony.

2.                  That on 31-10-84, nothing happened in our colony.

3.                  That on 1-11-84, at about 10:30 AM, an armed mob having lathis, iron rods and inflammable powder etc. attacked the local Gurdwara of Punjabi Colony. The mob killed the Sewadar and his family in the Gurdwara and burnt / looted the Gurdwara. When this news spread in the colony, all the Sikhs of the colony gathered near Gurdwara with their lathis / kirpans in their hands to defend themselves. On seeing this gathering of Sikhs of the colony, the mob ran away.

4.                  That on 1-11-84, at about 12 Noon or 1:00 PM, a huge mob armed with lathis, iron rods and highly inflammable powder again attacked our colony. On seeing this huge mob we decided to conceal ourselves in our houses and we came back to our houses.

5.                  That the mob started attacking the houses of the Sikhs. The mob systematically dragged the male members of the Sikh family on to the street and then burnt them alive. I concealed myself and my family on the roof of our house. To change my appearance, I cut my hair and came out of my house when the shouts of the mob were over. I could only hear the screams of victims. When I came out of my house, I saw 40 – 50 burnt dead bodies of Sikhs, which were lying here and there in the street and the women of the killed victims were crying over the dead bodies of their male members.

6.                  That on seeing the dead bodies, I got scared and decided to hide myself and my family in the house of neighbours and stayed there till the evening of 2-11-84. Thereafter, I left for Karol Bagh where my other relatives were living. I went to Karol Bagh and stayed there till 3-11-84.

7.                  That on evening of 3-11-84, I shifted to Nanaksar Camp, where my other family members were conveyed by the Army / Police.

8.                  That when we came back to our house after a week we observed that the Army and Police has made a check post in the Gurdwara Punjabi Colony. But we were shocked when the police changed the Gurdwara as their permanent Police Post in the year 1985.

9.                  That we made many representations to got the Gurdwara building vacated by the police. We recovered the building on 17th August,1994.
