Affidavit of Nanavati Commission

I, Kanti Devi, widow of late S.Prem Singh, aged 55 years r/o A-17, Gahmdri Extension, near Bhajanpura, Delhi do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under: 1. That in 1984, I and my family had been living at the above given address for ten years . My family had besides myself, my husband, a son 9 years old and one daughter 7 years old. 2. On 31.10.84, my son return from school about 1 or 2 O’Clock. He gave the news that Indira Gandhi had died. My husband who worked as a tailor in Karol Bagh, returned in the night and he also mentioned that Indira Gandhi had died. We stayed in our house. 3. On 1st November, 1984 at about 4 AM the rioters, first of all, set the Gurudwara Sahib on fire. All persons of the colony went to the Gurudwara. The rioters after setting the gurudwara on fire, went away. All colony persons also returned to their houses. In the afternoon at about 14.30, the attackers spread out in our street. They were carrying iron rods in their hands and bags containing powder. Many of rioters were under the influence of liquor. They entered the peoples houses and set those on fire. Then one came out of the houses. The attackers put tyres around the necks of Sikh males and set them on fire. My son was injured. After this we hid ourselves in the neighbour’s house. My husband was killed. 4. On 2nd November, we took shelter with some one in B Block – we stayed there. 5. On 3rd November, 1984 the military took us to Gurudwara Nanksar camp. We stayedin the camp for three months. I received Rs.3,50,000/- and Rs.5000/- as compensation for the loss. I got a job as well as a quarter was allotted. 6. I should get compensation for my house-hold goods. |
