BEFORE JUSTICE NANAVATI COMMISSION OF INQUIRY Witness No : 110 ) Name : Ms. Manjeet Kaur On SA I am shown one affidavit filed in 9th September, 1985 before Justice Ranganath Mishra Commission of Inquiry. It bears the signature of my husband. I identify his signature. It is true that on 31.10.84 a huge crowd were moving in our locality and making anti-sikh slogans. They also told that Sikhs to be killed and their houses to be looted. But nothing happened on that night. On 1.11.84 also a huge crowd had come to our locality and they were raising slogans because of that throughout the day we were required to remain in our house. Apprehending safety to our lives we moved to Balasaheb Gurudwara late in the evening and we remained there for the whole night. The mob was shouting that the Sikhs had poisoned the drinking water and that they had collected arms. On 2.11.84 morning at about 6.00 AM I had returned to my house with my children so that I could give them something to eat. At that time a big crowd attacked our house. The mob was pelting stones at our house. I, therefore along with my husband and children went at the terrace of my house. The labourers who were engaged in constructing DDA flats nearby had gone on the top of those houses and they were also pelting stones at our house. As a result of the stone throwing my husband and myself received injuries. The mob had then started looting our house. One or two policemen who were standing at some distance did not come to our rescue. My house was also set on fire. As we were very much afraid, we jumped over the terrace wall and went to the terrace of our neighbour Bhandari and Ram Singh and from there we reached the bunglow of Sobti Saheb. I had also come to know that the tailoring shop of my husband was looted and it was also set on fire. My husband had then gone to the shop and verified whether the said information was correct. He had found that the shop was in fact looted and burnt. As a result of damage caused to our house and shop we suffered a huge loss. If all this is stated in the affidavit of my husband then it is correct. We were treated in the Gurudwara for our injuries. Cross examination by Shri S.S. Gandhi, Senior Advocate on behalf of Delhi Police : My house is about 200 yards away from Balasaheb Gurudwara. It could be seen just across the road and from my house. Bhagwan Nagar and Jeevan Nagar are really one locality. 83, Bhagwan Nagar and 84, Jeevan Nagar are side by side. Smt Amar Pal Kaur W/o Amar Jeet Singh Bindra was a tenant in the adjoining house ( No.83-A). On 2.11.84, Amar Jeet Singh was burnt alive. I know that a report was made to the police that Amar Jeet Singh and his wife were missing. I do not know if any case was registered in respect of that offence. I know that my husband was called by the police and his statement was recorded. I had not deposed as a witness before Justice Ranganath Mishra Commission of Inquiry. I do not know if my husband had lodged a compliant before the police in respect of the attack on my house and shop but in all probability he must have done so as that was being done in respect of all the victims. On 1.11.84, I was told that our shop was set on fire by a mob. We had gone to the shop after few days. At the office of the ITO, I was asked about the incident and the damage caused to my house and the shop [ Mr. Gandhi states that the said statement before the Dy SP was really before the committee ( Jain-Aggarwal Committee ) appointed by the Delhi Government ]. That statement was recorded on 15.6.92. No cross examination by Shri Ashok Kashyap, Advocate on behalf of Central Government : Read over and found correct (MANJEET KAUR )
